Platforms supporting "protector"

If you need to run "protector" on a unix platform that isnt listed below, you shouldnt have too many problems. The Makefile may need work, and some "assumed to be present" utilities may need locating. If you undertake this task and get it working, I would appreciate hearing from you so that I can include the information on this page for others to benefit from - send your e-mail to protector@lowth.com - thanks.

VersionO.S.Mail serverStatusNotes

1.00.xRedHat linux SendmailSupported Protector 1.00 is written for (and on) RedHat linux running with sendmail and procmail. It has been installed on RedHat linux versions 6.0 through 7.3 (as of June 2002).

1.00.xRedHat linuxPostfixContributed A number of users have protector running with the postfix mail server under linux, and have been kind enough to provide details of how this was done.

1.00.xSolaris SendmailExperimental The 1.00.x software has also ported to Solaris, and is supported in "experimental" mode on that platform. The reason for this status is that I dont have access to a Solaris system, so cannot test each new release on it - but the news I have from users is that it works. The INSTALL document includes instructions on installing on this platform.

1.00.xSlackware SendmailContributed One happy user has managed to get protector 1.00.x working with Slackware and has written to me with details of how he did it. This required an edit to the Makefile. This link describes the changes needed.

1.01-betaRedHat linux SendmailSupported (for test only) Protector 1.01 is written for (and on) RedHat linux versions 7.0 through 7.3, running sendmail and procmail.

1.01-betaAny otherAnyUntried I have no news of anyone installing the 1.01-beta release on platforms other than RedHat linux, but am very interested to hear of any such attempts. Why not give it a go yourself and let me know how you get on?

AnyWindows NT / 2000-Not ported I have not had any requests for a Windows port of "protector", although I reason that it should be possible to achieve. I am unlikely to perform this work myself, but if you are interested in attempting the port, and are willing to publish the results of your efforts - then please make contact (protector@lowth.com) and I will add the details to this web page.

Support for other (unlisted) servers.

It is highly probable that you will be able to get protector 1.00.11 working with servers other than sendmail and postfix (under unix or linux) with ease, particularly if you already know how to configure the server in question to use "procmail" as it's local delivery agent. Try the following..

If this works, then please, please, please send protector@lowth.com details of what you did to get it working so that I can publish the results of your investigations for others to benefit from. When you do this; let me know whether you want your name to be mentioned on the web page I'll put up on this site about your efforts, or whether you'd rather remain annonymous.
